The Heart Disease Research Series is a new
lecture series at Brandeis University, sponsored by the Dan
Getz Endowed Fund for Heart Disease Research, in memory of
Dan Getz (1969-2006). The lecture series will provide an opportunity
for leading researchers to speak on current and novel approaches
for prevention, early detection, and treatment of America’s
leading killer.
Back home after a night out at a restaurant
in 2006, Dan Getz complained to his wife about suffering from
heartburn and back pain. Over the next few hours, the symptoms
grew progressively worse yet Dan never attributed them to
acute myocardial infarction. By the time the 37-year-old sought
medical attention, it was too late; he died of a massive heart
attack. Dan left behind a family committed to turning his
tragic death into a positive for society.
In Dan’s memory, the family established
the Dan Getz Endowed Fund for Heart Disease Research to raise
public awareness about the dangers of heart disease, what
to do about them, and advances in medical knowledge and treatment.
The fund will support a series of annual lectures featuring
Brandeis faculty and other leading international researchers
discussing prevention, early detection, and treatment of America’s
leading killer. This lecture series began in the fall of 2007.
This web site has been developed by Dan's
family as another way of remembering him and hopefully contributing
to improving the lives of others in his memory.
The web site will initially provide a calendar
of upcoming lectures in the series and background information
on the speakers with links to their published articles. We
hope this web site will become a resource for healthcare professionals
and the lay community unable to attend the lecture series
or interested in referring to past lectures – with access
to slides, relevant articles, additional links and information.
